Prevention of Back Pain
Lower back pain is a virtual epeidemic in this country. Over 50 Billion dollars are spent on its treatment, over 50 million work days lost, and next to the common cold it is the reason most people seek advice form thier doctors. It does not take that much to help prevent the problem. Proper body mechanics, specific spinal exercises, and proper posture are the weapons to fight back pain.
This blog will address posture. The major key is to maintian a proper curve in your lower back. Our lumbar spine, which has 5 vertebrae should have a slight forward curve, or opposite letter C...this curve is called a lordosis. This lordosis allows the body to spread the weight of your body to all the vertebrae, rather than just the lower 2.
Sititng for example places almost 200 pounds of force per square inch on the lower back!! Sitting however with the proper lordosis decreases this pressure significantly.
